Kids' Letters to
President Obama.

In January 2009, McSweeney's and 826 National published Thanks and Have Fun Running the Country: Kids' Letters to President Obama, edited by Jory John. Since the publication of the book, Mr. John has continued to collect kids' letters to Obama, and occasionally some of them will appear here.

Installment Two.

Dear President Obama,

Animals all over the country are homeless, injured, or put to sleep because their owners can't afford the surgery or the medicine.

I watch Animal Planet almost every day. I see that Michigan has lots of problems with animals there. There are even lots of dogfights there, too.

My suggestion is that each animal, animal hospital, pound, and animal shelter should get money to raise the animals there, and not put them to sleep. Some pets are put to sleep because they're aggressive. Can you think of a way to help them and find them a permanent home?

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely,

Giselle Perez, age 12
San Francisco

P.S. I like your dog. But you should've gotten more than one.

Dear President Obama,

I want to recommend that the Man of the Year is Dane Cook, because he is very funny. He makes up the funniest jokes. He wears funny clothes. I would say that is all I know about Dane Cook.

But I also think a second person should be Man of the Year: that's you, Barack Obama. You are our 44th president, our first African-American president, and you have a better tax plan for the middle class. You also have a great health-care plan to use.

So those are my Men of the Year: Dane and Barack.

Sincerely,

Luke Vanden, age 11
Los Angeles

Dear President Barack Obama,

My name is Mia Rose Boyette Eisendorf and I am 10 years old. I live in Los Angeles, California. Almost two years ago, my family moved here from Washington, D.C. It is very nice there and I'm sure you, Michelle, Malia, and Sasha are liking it, a lot.

Speaking of Malia and Sasha, there is something I would like to recommend for them. It is a website and magazine for girls, by girls. The website is newmoon.com and the magazine is called New Moon Girls magazine. The website lets girls all over the world express their feelings, concerns, and thoughts about, well, anything.

Good luck!

Mia Rose Boyette Eisendorf, age 10
Los Angeles

P.S. Did you like the song by will.i.am called "It's a New Day"? I did!
