My love, you have been my faithful partner in watching shows on streaming services.

Every day, I fall more in love with joining you to watch these programs, from the entire twenty-eighth season of The Bachelorette to a couple of episodes from the first season of Baskets, which I agree was very silly, to a single, intriguing episode of Paranormal Lockdown. (I’m so glad you found a program that you like!)

Now, in front of my Kleenex box and the stuffed French bulldog you gave me last year for my birthday, I promise to watch each and every episode of Freaks and Geeks with you and only you.

With this remote, which I’m holding for now but, of course, can pass back and forth between us, I promise to cue up episodes of Freaks and Geeks only when we are together after we have finished a hearty pasta salad and are ready to sit and digest. I know we can finish this entire program using our combined, unwavering Hulu-viewing strength.

Even if I’m tempted to watch another episode by myself one night because I like the show and Hulu has reminded me that a new episode is available, I will always refrain. Instead, I will catch up on Only Murders in the Building, which I know we tried one time and didn’t click with you, so I took it on as my solo program (it’s okay!).

I promise to wait until you are by my side on this couch so we can experience the next episode as a team and continue on our Freaks and Geeks journey.

The road toward choosing Freaks and Geeks as our next streaming program was long and not always easy. We questioned whether we wanted drama, comedy, or dramedy. A show with a single, powerful season or many seasons? One with episodes that are thirty minutes, a full hour, or varying lengths depending on each episode’s artistic goal?

Ultimately, we chose Freaks and Geeks for our next program because, after we watched the first episode together as a trial, we agreed that we loved its blend of humor and heart and wanted to follow Sam and Lindsay Weir’s story. I’m glad you’re ready to join me for this great television adventure.

I vow to keep pressing “play” with you over and over again. I promise to listen to your biggest hopes, dreams, and fears about Lindsay and whether she’s going down the right path. I vow to be your constant Freaks and Geeks companion in an often overwhelming streaming environment with so many choices.

And as we are watching, if you have to get up for some water or get black-and-white cookies out of the cabinet for us to share, I commit to pausing Freaks and Geeks with this remote and waiting patiently until you sit down once again. Even when you’re sick, I’ll still watch the next episode with you, but simply leave additional distance between us on the couch and offer you more tissues as needed.

I commit to processing plot points with you during commercial breaks and relating them to our lives. I’ll ask, “Were you also like Sam in ninth grade?” Even if I secretly hope you say, “Yes!” I will remain open to hearing, “No,” “Not really,” or “Actually, I was more of a Nick.” I will listen and look forward to sharing my stories about eating ravioli in the cafeteria when I was fourteen.

As I pass this remote to you so you can press play on episode 2, I connect our love for streaming shows to the love for television that came before us, because I know your parents and my parents also like watching shows in loving dyads, creating an unbroken chain of television devotion.

I choose to watch this program with you, fiercely and without hesitation, for as long as it takes to finish all eighteen episodes. That is my Freaks and Geeks vow.
